People's Educational Awareness Service Trust

The river Cauvery water sharing disputes which exists for the more than 5 decades between Tamilnadu and Karnataka states left the Cauvery delta region fallow.

This forced the wetlands farmers to transform into alternative crop system and quit the farmers from raising the cash crops like paddy, Banana, Sugarcane and coconut. Due to lessor flowing of water in the canals of cauvery irrigation system, frequent failure of monsoon rain and erratic rainfalls. Several thousand of small and marginal farmers left their traditional livelihood seeking for alternative sources of livelihood in civil construction sector, blue metal quarrying, sand quarrying, bricks kilns, local and long distance trucking industry and small and medium industries in Lalgudi taluk of Trichy district.

In such a critical situations, People’s Education Awareness Service Trust (PEAS) came to response to the suffering of target farmers and daily wage earning agricultural labourers in 1997.

Ongoing Project of PEAS Trust

For the past 3 years, the major project entitled, “organic farming of horticulture crops among the marginal farmers” is being implemented in Lalgudi, Pullambadi and Manachanallur blocks of Trichy district. Under this project, the horticulture crops that brinjal, lady’s finger, chillie and pitter guard are cultivated by the farmers.

Preparation of organic external inputs by the target farmers themselves. The following organic external inputs are being prepared:

Marketing of the product:
The farmers are marketing their organic produce in local weekly market, local villages and district market thereby make daily earnings.
